It is astonishing that they stayed in the game so long.
The numbers mentioned in the note don't tell the story fully ... $35k for a 35mm projector that lasts 15 years. The digital equipment is outdated in 2 years and costs five times as much. The movie theaters have to pay, but only the studios see major cost benefits. No one adjusted the price of digitally delivered movies to make the formula work.
To make matters worse the Boeing effort was very expensive. The trials that have worked (except for the problem noted above) ship multiple CDs via FedEx - amazing bandwidth.
